Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse

Licensed Practical Nurses are very much in demand in lieu of America's nursing shortage. The program for becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse is approximately one year or less. Financial aid is available for this training program

as well as many other sources of funding. Licensed Vocational Nurses/LPN's make only a few dollars less than Registered Nurses.

This is perhaps due to their scope of practice is less inclusive than that of Registered Nurses. By 1994, LPNs earned over $14 per hour on average. There was a short decline in wages of not only LPNs but for RN's as well during the years between 1994 and 1998.(1) In the year 2001 LPNs were making between $17.78 and $21.15. In 2007, a graduate RN who had passed their state boards made approximately $22.50 per hour. Licensed practical nurses held about 749,000 jobs in 2006. About 26 percent of LPNs worked in hospitals, 26 percent in nursing care facilities, and another 12 percent in offices of physicians. Others worked for home health care services; employment services; residential care facilities; community care facilities for the elderly; outpatient care centers; and Federal, State, and local government agencies. About 19 percent worked part time. (2)

The scope of practice for LPNs vary from state to state as mandated by the State Board of Nursing. In general, the LPN is able to feed and bathe the patient, empty Foleys, J-pegs, colostomy bags, take a patient's blood pressure, temperature (orally or rectally), exercise patient via assisting patient with walking, pass medications, change dressings of 2 day post- operative wounds as well as dress bedsores at stage II decubitus ulcer, report patient changes to the nurse, transport patient, give some injections (though not I.V.Push), hang IV bags, give massages and administer enemas.

LPNs can monitor patients for untoward reactions to medications or treatments and report findings to the RN. The RN is then responsible for follow up and to re-assessing the patient. The LPN works under the guidance and supervision of the RN. The RN's license is jeopardized if the LPN does more than their job description if given instructions to do so by the RN. The LPN can help with regard to patient teaching, such as dietary suggestions for diabetics, and importance of tight glycemic control.

In most cases LPNs find employment in nursing homes, medical clinics, doctors offices and hospitals.

LPNs are required to pass a state licensing exam (NCLEX-PM) upon graduation from Licensed Practical Nursing Program.(2) A high school diploma as well as a nursing entrance test is required to gain admittance into the program. In 2006 there were over 1,500 State-approved LPN training programs in the U.S. In times past nursing programs were offered directly through hospitals. This type of practice has been replaced by individual nursing schools. LPN curriculum requires that the student review, learn, be tested upon and apply critical thinking in an actual heath care settings. Courses include anatomy and physiology, medication calculation, pediatric nursing, maternity nursing, medical surgical nursing, nutrition, psychiatric nursing and CPR.

Further education is encouraged for graduate LPNs/LVNs. Hospitals, nursing homes and sometimes medical clinics will often pay for furthering the education of an LPN/LVN to becoming an RN. In many cases, it is much easier for an LPN/LVN to obtain their Registered Nursing Degree. This is in part due to their prior patient care experience and the fact that many Registered Nursing Programs require that LPNs/LVNs attend a one year program to complete their R.N. Degree. This is the road that many LPN/LVNs take. They get their LVN/LPN and then go for their RN Degree while they are already working in the field.

Since 1982, acupuncture has found its way to the US. There are currently 50 schools that teach it and 3,000 licensed practitioners all over the country. Do you think you can be a licensed professional? Here are a few things to help you look for a good acupuncture school.

ed by the National Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  It is recognized by the Department of Education and some of these schools even have a masters program.
Most of these schools can be found online so you can give them a call and ask certain questions about the school. You can find out the cost of tuition, the teacher student ratio, if the school offers consultation services to students and the alumni and if they have an extensive library which focuses on traditional Chinese medicine.
Should there be a school near where you live, you should probably take it so you don't have to worry about boarding and lodging as this is just added cost to this long term investment.  
If you like the school but cannot afford the cost of tuition, find out if they offer scholarships or if they have a grant in aid program. If there are none, then check with the federal government because they should have one and they will give it to deserving students who plan to enroll in a school accredited by the National Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
Some states do not require you to get a license once you graduate from the program. However, if you plan to practice this elsewhere, you should prepare yourself for the state board exam as this is a requirement.
The lists of subjects you will be learning in school include anatomy, body therapy, massage therapy and the other sciences. Training will be done also in a clinical setting so you are able to put theory into practice but this will only happen in your third year.
While some schools will let you finish a program in three years, there are those that can be completed after five.
Lately, acupuncture school has also gone down the digital path by offering cyber distance programs for those who cannot go to school. Some of these offer CEU's or continuing education units to advance programs.
These courses can be chosen on the basis of modules or on an hourly basis. The course material covers the history, theory and techniques of acupuncture. Courses that offer tools such as acupuncture DVD and video are ideal for acupuncturists or students of acupuncture to improve their clinical expertise.
Once you graduate from acupuncture school, some will open their own practice while others will first work for a clinic. Those who decide to be employed will work with other professionals that may include naturopaths, chiropractors and other specialists that are also into Oriental Medicine.
The average acupuncturist makes about $45,000 a year but this can change in the years to follow as they add years or experience under their belt. This just goes to show that if you work hard, you too will make a fortune. Just make sure that you do this properly for each patient because one mistake could make this all go away.

High School Freshman Scholarships: Getting a Jump Start Early

As a senior in high school, you are wanting to enjoy your last year. You may have just gotten your driving license and are
experiencing this new freedom. There can be a little apprehension about college and one's future. Still, it's time to take care of some important business which includes college applications, essays for school and also applying for scholarship money.

y don't want to deal with more paperwork for getting grants or funding. But, this is important to do. Some are renewable and you also have no idea if your family's situation can change when you are a sophomore or junior.
There are some scholarships that are awarded only to incoming freshman so these are great to take advantage of. Some local
businesses, charities and organizations specifically give money to the graduating class seniors. Ask your guidance counselor about these. Brainstorm on your talents, family heritage and interests to generate more ideas for scholarships.
Documents can be lost, so go through the trouble of making a copy of them and don't delete from your hard drive. You can find some forms on the internet, but others need to be mailed or picked up at a financial aid office. Some scholarships for freshman include the importance of community involvement and volunteer work such as the Paul Funk Foundation. One's grade point matters but more and more schools and foundations are also looking for a well-rounded individual with community service activities. If your grades are high, be sure to supplement them with volunteer work. This can easily be found in your community. If you can tie it in with what you are thinking of majoring in that is even better. It will show a strong focused individual. For instance, work in a school system if you are thinking of going into early education or child development.

Melbourne International Airport at Kendall Tamiami Executive Airport. The flight was about 160 nautical miles and we only have about 2 and a half hours. This was a very, very nice flight, the weather was good and everything went smoothly. We flew along the beautiful east coast of Florida, we had to depart once and a while because requested by ATC, butoverall very pleasant flight. Private Pilot License - Requirements to Get Your Pilot License

If you are contemplating on becoming a Pilot then there are some basics you must know right from the beginning before you even enroll in a flight training School. All Pilot licenses are governed by the FAA, which stands for Federal Aviation Association. They are the ones that set the rules on what is required for an individual to obtain a Pilot's license. They are also the ones that govern the tests that determine whether you will become licensed or not. Let's talk first about the preliminary steps before you pursue any type of training.

Preliminary Step One:
You must meet the age requirements. In order to obtain your Student Pilot Certificate you have to be a minimum of 16 years of age. If you met these criteria then you are allowed to fly the solo requirements of the course. In order to become a fully licensed Private Pilot you must be 17 years of age.

Preliminary Step Two:
You will be required to read, speak and write fluent English. This is necessary because you will have to read your manuals, maps and instruments. You will be required to learn radio communication and you will have to write your exams. All of this is done in English. If this is not your first language and you have concerns whether your command of the English language is good enough then you may want to consider a least a basic course in this area before your pursue your training.

Preliminary Step Three:
In order to qualify to even attempt at getting your Private Pilots License you are going to have to pass a medical and obtain a certificate stating you are in good health.

Preliminary Step Four:
Arranging for the payment of your course. In order to determine this you will probably need to do some research as to what flight training schools are available in your area, and what their fees are. No matter what they quote plan on paying extra in case you want to purchase extra flying time. Moreover, there will be some equipment and textbooks costs. Be sure these are included in the quote. You are probably looking at anywhere between $4,000-$6,000. With the cost of fuel now, these prices are probably in the low range.

Preliminary Step Five:
Time scheduling. You will not know the exact time schedule until you have chosen your school. There is no point in going any further though unless you can ensure you are going to be able to dedicate some fair amount of time to your flying studies. If you go about this intermittently then in all likeliness you will not complete your course. You are probably going to be required around 65 flight hours before you final exam. Then there is the theory to be learned prior to this, which constitutes a written exam as well.

Once you have satisfactorily completed five preliminary steps you should be in a position to now seek out accredited flying schools. Don't rush into this and make sure you check around to see how established the schools are.

Florida Adjuster License - Be Careful of Tall Stories From Texas

The University of Central Florida and Florida Insurance University receive daily calls from students interested in obtaining the Florida All Lines adjuster license. Often the prospective student has been making a careful examination of the different schools and providers who offer adjuster designations in Florida. One tall tale that has been making the rounds is that if a Florida resident first obtains the Texas non-resident license, the student can then use that Texas license to obtain the Florida license through reciprocity. Nothing could be further from the truth!

If you are a Florida resident, you must qualify for the Florida All Lines license by taking an approved designation course for the Florida license, or take the state exam.

Several years ago, we received a frantic call from one insurance company which had about 60 adjusters who had taken the Texas course. Each adjuster had spent approximately $600 for the Texas training, only to find out that nobody qualified for the Florida license, because they were Florida residents.

When they found out that if they taken the Florida Accredited Claims Adjuster Designation first, they would have qualified for the Texas license through reciprocity and that they would not have been required to take the Texas course or spend the extra money, believe me...there were some big, angry adjuster dudes!

The way the system works is:

1. If you are a Florida resident, you may take the Accredited Claims Adjuster Designation and be exempted from the state exam for the 5-20 Independent or 6-20 Company license, or take the state licensing test;

2. If you are a non-resident and your state requires adjuster licensing, you must have your home state's license before Florida will allow you to obtain the non-resident license;

3. If you are a non-resident and your state does not require adjuster licensing, you are eligible for the Florida non-resident license by taking the ACA Designation course.

If any school or organization tells you that a Florida resident can obtain the license without meeting Florida's requirements first, exercise caution, and check those representations with the Department of Financial Services in Tallahasse by going to www.fldfs.com.
