Flight School - Choosing the Right One

It wasn't until 1926 when the Air Commerce Act was signed into law by Calvin Coolidge did licensing pilots become a requirement. With this additional requirement, the first Flight School came into existence around the same time to help students pass the FAA's exam.

There are a number of different types of certificates and ratings offered by flight schools - from a Sport Pilot License to Air Transport Pilot License. A Private Pilot Certificate requires a minimum of 35 hours of flight training and a Commercial Pilot Certificate requires at least 120 hours.

Each school is required to give their students both ground training, which consist of an instructor teaching in the class room and air training in which you pilot the plane with the instructor.

The flight training schools themselves can be licensed under FAR Part 61 or FAR Part 141. FAR 141 flight schools can only have the "141" designation if the school and training syllabus are approved by the FAA. Plus the quality of student performance is measured through progressive flight exams throughout their training. Training is documented to FAA standards. Training conducted according to FAR Part 61 typically requires more hours for licensing than FAR Part 141, but stage checks (flight exams throughout training) are not required. At the completion of the specific program, the student pilot must take an FAA checkride to obtain a license or rating.

If you plan on a career as a pilot, you will most likely train under FAR Part 141. If you are an international student, the US State Department requires you to also train under FAR Part 141 regulations.

Now the next step is how to determine a flight training school that best suits you needs. The basic steps below, will help you make a good choice.

1. Create a Checklist to use to evaluate each school you think you may be interested in attending.

2. Check out these schools web sites for more information. Then call or email to request more information from them.. Be sure to tell them if you have already logged any hours or if you have achieved any flight certificates. Also, be sure to let the school know what your goal is - recreational flying or career flying. Some flight training organizations are small and have part-time instructors. This might be perfectly adequate to train you to be a weekend flyer, but probably not what you want if you expect to end up flying B-767s for an airline. And if your goal is professional, career flying, you may want to ask if the flight school is accredited by a national accreditation agency - an accredited school has to have high standards in quality of instruction, accuracy in their marketing, and must be strong financially. If you plan to re-locate for your schooling, another good question is the cost of living in the area.

If you are like many flight training students, you will most likely be on a budget, so you'll probably prefer your training in an area where you can live modestly. It would, of course, be preferable if the locale has apartments available at a low cost, plus has great recreational opportunities: After all, you'll probably be living there for a year.

Another good question concerns the weather - does the area offer excellent weather? If not, you will most likely find that you're not able to fly as often as you wish because of bad weather. That means it will quite possibly take you longer to complete your flight training in, for example, Oregon and Indiana than it will in Florida simply because of the weather. Also, be sure to ask about the training aircraft. You'll want many aircraft - and newer ones. Older aircraft are more often "down" for maintenance, which, again, means you may not be able to fly as often as you'd like - thus, extending the time necessary for you to become certified...

3. If possible, visit your top two or three schools on your list. Talk to instructors and students and ask to see the training aircraft. Do you like the way the school "feels?" Do you feel you would fit in and be comfortable studying and flying there?. Of course, if you're an international student wanting to come to the US for flight training, you may not be able to visit. In that case, be sure you talk to an Admissions Officer and ask all your questions - and don't hesitate to ask for advice, if you're not sure how to proceed with your flight training. An Admissions Officer at the flight school will be able to advise you, based on what your goals are.

4. Once you're comfortable with choosing a school and you've found one that meets the checklist that you created in step 1, you'll also want to get a written agreement with costs and the courses or programs you'll be receiving.

5. Now that you've gone through this most important selection process, get ready to study hard, learn new and exciting things, and have the time of your life! You'll probably very quickly learn why so many pilots say "flying is my passion."

Turning Procrastination Into a Criminal Offense

Everyone procrastinates. In most cases we procrastinate until we are forced to deal with whatever we are avoiding. Pay your credit card bill late and you get a notice - it may cost you a little but no biggie. Skip your workout for a few weeks and you'll gain a few pounds but you can always lose the weight. But if you get a traffic ticket and don't pay the fine on time or worse forget it all together you get hit hard - your drivers license is suspended. At least that's the way it works in Florida.

In 2006 over 1.4 million drivers in Florida got their drivers license suspended for not complying with a court order, summons, or fine. In most cases these were drivers who got a ticket and did not pay the fine on time or did not appear in court on the date ordered. Unlike your credit card company, the Florida DMV does not give warnings.

Not paying your traffic ticket is the easiest way to get your drivers license Suspended in Florida.

To make matters worse, many of the drivers who got their license suspended ignored the order and continued to drive. If you get your license suspended you can get a hardship license that allows you to drive for work or school. But many drivers don't. Those drivers that continue to drive with a suspended license put themselves at further risk. If you are caught driving with a suspended license and convicted it is considered a criminal offense.

Get a Hardship License

Getting a hardship license is not a difficult process. The Florida Drivers Association explains the process on http://www.123driving.com. A hardship license allows you drive to work or for business purposes or educational purposes. In 2006, over 227,000 drivers were charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license. These drivers managed to turn procrastination in a criminal offense.

Take a Class, Get a License

If your drivers license is suspended or revoked in Florida, in most cases you can take a class called ADI (Advanced Driver Improvement). This is a 12-hour traffic school class. The good news is that you can procrastinate. The class lets you login and logout and finish the class on your schedule. When you enroll in the class you get a proof of enrollment, which in most cases is all you need to get your hardship license. Of course when you have your hardship license be aware of the restrictions or you'll be right back where you started with no license to drive and running out of options.

4-40 to 2-20 Conversion Course - Becoming a Florida Insurance Agent

This article discusses the Florida 4-40 to 2-20 Conversion Course. This course is specific to Florida licensing and is the way a FL 4-40 CSR can become a FL 2-20 agent without taking a 200 hour course.

Florida makes a distinction between a 2-20 General Lines Agent and a 4-40 Customer Service Representative. A 2-20 Agent is one who may sell insurance and operate an insurance agency. A 4-40 Customer Service Representative works under the direction and control of a 2-20 Agent, assisting the agent in the sales and operation of the business.

There are two ways to become a 2-20 General Lines Agent. The first is to take and pass the 200 hour pre-licensing course required by the state, and then successfully complete the state licensing exam.

The second is to obtain the 4-40 license and work as a full time customer service representative for at least one year. This license is achieved by taking the Florida Insurance University/University of Central Florida Registered Customer Service Representative Designation, which excuses the student from the state licensing test for the 4-40 license.

Once that has been done, the student may take and pass the 4-40 to 2-20 Conversion Course which is offered by Florida Insurance University. This course is a 40 hour distance learning course that qualifies the applicant to take the state licensing exam.

In the current economy, the insurance profession is one of the few where jobs and incomes are not only stable, but growing. Job opportunities are good for those who have sales experience and good interpersonal skills. The U.S. Government reports that employment for insurance sales agents is expected to grow through 2016. The median annual earnings of insurance sales agents were $43,870 in May 2006. The range of earnings reflected that the highest 10% earned more than $115,090. Company paid benefits usually include continuing education, group insurance plans, office space, auto and transportation expenses, health insurance and retirement benefits.

Private Pilot License Cost - What Private Pilot Training Will Really Cost You

There are a lot of factors that will determine what a Private Pilot License (Certificate) will cost you. The first things you want to think about are:

1: Airplane Price Per Hour

2: Flight Instructor Price Per Hour

Depending on where you are in the country these rates can be dramatically different. These two rates will be the most important factors however, there are other factors that can dramatically increase your cost. I will give you some examples of things you want to look at.

1: The Flight School Itself: You need to poke your nose around the community and see what is going on. You will want to ask people who recently got their Private Pilot License and ask them how much it cost and how many hours they ended up having.

In many cases you will see much more than the flashy clean flight school. I know of many Flashy High Dollar Flight Schools that once you get out into the aviation community, you will want nothing to do with them. You may find many of the people you talk to ending up with an excessive amount of hours and may have had up to six instructors. I know this first hand since many of those students come to me half way through their training. This is one reason I always tell people to take some time and research and come up with a plan first.

There are on the other hand many flight schools that are concerned about their students and are willing to work with students to get them licensed in a cost effective manner. You just have to find them.

2: The Flight Instructor: If your instructor is not a good teacher your chances of getting your private pilot license in a cost effective manner get slimmer. You need to look into this. Other factors that have to do with the flight instructor is their aviation game-plan. If they are a good flight instructor that cares about his/her students you can plan with them and get things done in a cost and time effective manner. If you have an instructor that is just trying to get to the magic hiring number for an airline, your flight training will be compromised and you can plan on spending a lot more money.

3: Books and materials: In most cases you can get home study courses for about $200 or so. Some schools will require you get their $500 DVD packages. I have always told students to do what is best for them. All of the courses out there cover the same material taken from the official FAA publications. The material that is used for your practical test is the FAA publications.

4: Examiner Fees: This part most flight schools don't even mention at all. Once again depending on where you are in the world, this price can vary a lot. One part of the country you may find a private pilot flight test for $200 but in others like here in phoenix it will around $400.

A few of these factors put together can make the difference between a happy safe confident Private Pilot and a frustrated student pilot. If you are on a tight budget and have been saving for a long time, these factors will make a difference.

Planning this out is the most important thing you can do. In order to pass the Private Pilot License flight test you need to be proficient. Depending on the rates, instructor, and Flight School You Choose, $8,000 - $9,000 is a realistic budget and finishing at 45-50 hours is realistic.

The Planning process is the most important part. There are many delays that can happen, weather, maintenance and people getting sick.

For Explaining this I break the Private Pilot License Cost down into four parts. I do this so you can understand each phase of training. Then we will add it all up and you can see were the expenses are coming from. I break everything down in the following manner:

-Private Pilot License Books and Materials Cost
-Private Pilot License Pre-Solo Pilot Training Cost
-Private Pilot License Post- Solo Pilot Training Cost
-Private Pilot License Flight Test Preparation Cost

Private Pilot Training Cost

Each one of these areas has a cost. It is easier to understand when you have everything broken down in front of you. Planning for the Private Pilot License is the most important thing you can do.

Hope to See You in the Sky
